RaLeno 15W RGB Streaming Light — Ergonomics and build quality
The light is made of plastic and feels well-constructed. The diffuser, buttons, and dial feel solid, and don’t wiggle.
The base of the stand is heavy, which is good since the pole extends to 27.5″ feet, a useful height. The rubber grip feels good, and allows you to tighten with confidence.
RaLeno 15W RGB Streaming Light — In the field
Because the panel has a lit LCD back panel, it’s relatively easy to adjust, even in the dark. However, you do have to memorize the functions of the buttons since they are not backlit.
Buttons
- On/Off Icon: You may turn the light on or off remotely.
- CH/GR: This is the Channel/Group Button. With the remote control, you can control multiple lights by assigning them to the same channel and group.
- FN: This is the Function Button. This allows you to toggle between, well, functions. This allows you to, among other things, adjust various parameters, including brightness.
- MODE: With this, you can switch between CCT, HSI, and Scene lighting.
You can’t really see the lettering or icon unless the back of the light is well-illuminated. However, there are only four buttons, so it’s easy to figure out quickly. And really, there’s probably only three since you’re unlikely to continually change the channels or groups much anyway. And the other one is an on/off switch. Still, it would be nice to have something more visible.
Three lighting functions
- CCT (Correlated Colour Temperature) allows you to control what sort of white there is. Since its range is rather broad (2500–8500K), you can dial in a warm or cold white light as you wish. This would be good for either product photography, Zoom meetings, or video content creation.
- HSI (Hue Saturation Intensity) gives you the ability to change the color from 0-360. And like the name implies, it also allows you to control the saturation of that color as well as the intensity (brightness).
- There are several Scene effects. This includes Lightning, Police Light, Bad Bulb (a sort of random flickering and dimming), TV, Candle, and RGB Color Cycle (this cycles through various colors, and is fun to use as background light while creating video content).
The manufacturer states in the user manual that the CRI is at least 95. CRI stands for Color Rendering Index of how a light renders colors, with a perfect score being 100. Higher scores of above 90 hold detail and look richer and more vibrant. Lower scores can look increasingly washed out and lacking detail.
Controlling the light through the remote control
All parameters worked well, whether the remote control was attached to the back of the light or approximately 50 feet away. This was true even with two closed doors and two walls between the light and the remote control. The dial feels slightly cheap, but was not wiggly, and worked well.
I love that the remote is magnetic, and is extremely easy to attach to the back of the light for charging or storage. Great design.
I wasn’t able to test this I only have one light, but I did notice that the remote control has forty channels. FORTY.
Mounting the light
The stand can be used with or without the 360-degree Spherical Head, which is essentially a ball head. If that’s not enough, the kit also comes with a cold shoe so you can mount the light on the camera.
